This week we hosted some architecture students fro

This week we hosted some architecture students from @oxfordbrookes for a two day green wood intro. They did some turning, making legs for a future furniture project, and some ‘spoon’ carving making spoony components for a construction which will be put together back at their studio. They were super quick learners and got to grips with green wood quickly. Hopefully it may influence some of their thinking in the future. And we had fun!

Day one of our introduction to green wood working course you make your own mallet and a spatula. 💅

Every day of this four day course you create a new project. At the end of the course you’ll know how to use a range of tools safely and you’ll have a mallet, a set of chopsticks, a butter spreader, a turned object like a rolling pin or porridge spurtle and a cooking spoon! We also give you your own carving knife so you can go off and whittle at home.

Using a range of hand tools including adzes, gouges, axes and drawknives participants spend an energetic day making their own unique bowl.

Another magical set of Family Whittling sessions last week 🪵✨ our young makers made a bundle of personally designed tools to take home 🌿

We learnt straight cuts, we learnt thumb push cuts, we learnt stop cuts and we learnt to do it all safely, as the young people’s grown ups learnt how to ensure they can both be making confidently🙏💪
.
People keep asking how they can join us! And it’s as simple as booking in the link in our bio! We have sessions for 6-8’s, and 9+’s - and each young person books with one adult so the family levels up their knife skills together 🏕️

We had Family Whittling yesterday in our 6-8’s and 9+’s sessions for young makers and their grown up. We explored the uses of different woods for our projects, using elder to make marshmallow forks and hazel for decorative tools.

In our Family Whittling sessions we empower young people to develop wood carving skills using safe knife techniques, while enabling their accompanying adult to learn how to supervise and grow their creativity together.

We were so lucky to have hosted the talented @yoav.kafets at our workshop a few weeks back.
.
Yoav taught a one day improver’s bowl turning course aimed at people with previous experience on the pole lathe. He also taught a two day course, giving participants the opportunity to dive deeper into pole lathe techniques as well as turning at least one bowl and one cup!
.
All students came away with a greater appreciation of the craft as well as a thirst to continue creating stunningly beautiful and ergonomic every-day objects.
