We have cancelled all our courses and public events because of the Covid-19 outbreak, we will recommence once it’s safe for everyone to come out and join in.
In the meantime we are developing online courses and have updated our resources and tool recommendations for people learning to carve at home.
London Green Wood is a not-for-profit cooperative and a community of green woodworkers based in Abney Park Cemetery, Hackney. Our aim is to encourage crafty-ness, creativity and self-reliance in everybody. From our outdoor woodland workshop, using locally felled wood, we bring heritage crafts to the heart of the city and make basic woodcraft skills available to all. We use hand tools and green wood straight from the log.
Teaching green woodwork in East London
We have been running events and teaching courses at our woodland workshop since 2011. We promise a beautiful setting, friendly people, the satisfaction of learning new skills and a fire when it gets chilly.
We run courses for adults, for families, for group bookings (away days, bonding, parties or just because) and deliver woodworking sessions in partnership with other community groups.
Cooperative Members’ workshop
We are a cooperative. The members’ workshop is open Monday, Thursday, Friday, and the first Saturday of each month. Winter hours are 9am-4pm, summer hours are 10am-5pm. During members’ sessions there is no formal teaching but there are people around to advise. Tools and wood are provided.
Membership is open to anyone who supports the aims of LGW and has sufficient green woodworking experience to work independently (using through joining our Intro to Green Woodwork course).
We run monthly volunteering days to build equipment at the workshop, on the last Thursday and Friday of each month. Volunteering days are open to over 18s only, no experience necessary.
We are open to volunteers who want to support us in any way. Previous volunteers have taken on tutor support roles on our one day courses or on regular sessions for children and families.
