Learn how to turn a wooden bowl using a foot powered pole lathe at our woodland workshop in the city. Suitable for beginners and improvers. The only place in London teaching non-electric bowl turning!

What happens in this course?

Learn a heritage craft at the London Green Wood workshop. You will use a foot powered pole lathe to turn your own wooden bowl from locally grown green wood. Starting by learning good axe technique to prepare your bowl blank then how to set up a pole lathe you will move on to master the use of bowl turning hook tools. Powering your lathe by foot you will create a functional wooden bowl to take home with you. We will also talk about drying, oiling and caring for your bowl as well as selecting materials and how to continue.

Concessions rates available for those who would otherwise be unable to attend.

We work outdoors in all weathers, please come prepared.

Things to remember

We have no indoor space and will be working outside in all weathers (under a tarp if it rains) so please come prepared. No sandals or bare feet please. Walking boots or work boots if you can, a thick sole will help to keep your feet warm in cold weather. In winter, fingerless gloves can be good, but no full gloves when working with tools. If you use reading glasses please bring them with you.

Tea and coffee are provided. There is also a cafe onsite.

This course is for over 18yrs only.

Can I turn a wooden bowl left handed?

Yes you can. We can set up a lathe specifically to suit left handed participants.
